The Good Ship Blank and Ballast is an installation conceived for the K21 in Düsseldorf, comprising a field of rough aluminum ballast balls molded in the shape of Brancusi’s Newborn, a medieval image of a ‘Ship of Fools’ which Skaer has carved into the floor of the museum, and a large photograph of a theatre curtain. Skaer applied ink to her carving on the floor, using it as a stamp to imprint the image on the photograph, with the field of ballast balls suspended in between.
